My first ever read-a-thon! I've been blogging for a whole year and never signed up for one! It's slightly more difficult for me though, as I'm not awake for any lengthy consistent periods at the best of times, much less trying to read for 24 hours straight! That's why I like Bout-of-books so much - there's no pressure, you just read more than you would normally.
It's strange - I don't work and yet I still never seem to have enough time to read. This week, for me, is about putting aside all those time-wasting activities (I'm looking at you, Castleville!) and making the concerted effort to get those books read!

In Leah's Wake by Terri Giuliano Long
I'm actually half-way through this at the minute so hopefully I can finish it by Tuesday. It's the last book I have to review at the minute though, so it's plain sailing after this!
Telling Tales: A History of Literary Hoaxes by Melissa Katsoulis
I know it's not always the best idea to choose non-fiction for a read-a-thon, but in my defence a) it sounds fascinating, b) it's my Random Read for this month and c) I'm at my boyfriend's until Wednesday with not a lot of reading material.
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Moby Dick by Gideon Defoe
I've hardly been quiet about my adoration of The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists, but I actually bought my own copy and the next in the series on a trip to Leeds this week. It's short and light-hearted, so perfect for a read-a-thon.
So, three books. Not overly ambitious, I think. I have a couple of ideas for if I manage to get through these three, but we'll see.

5/14 - Monday

Comments: I'm off to a good start today because I read way more of In Leah's Wake last night than I thought I would, so I finished it this lunchtime. That's great because I didn't expect to finish it until late Tuesday/Wednesday :) Had lots of time for reading today due to my boyfriend's X-box playing! I love days when we both do our own thing, but together.
5/15 - Tuesday
Books I’ve read today: Telling Tales by Melissa Katsoulis (FINISHED!) and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.
Pages I’ve read today: 76 pages of Telling Tales and 73 pages of The Sound and the Fury.
Comments: Ugh, today is an ill day. Between throwing up and glaring blankly at the wall, I'm not sure how many pages will be read today. On the bright side, I finished my second book and I didn't expect to until about Friday. Because of this, I hadn't brought another book with me to my boyfriend's place, so I was stuck reading The Sound and the Fury. Dear God that book sucks. Add to illness and it equals a not overly productive day. I also did Mini-Challenge #2.
5/16 - Wednesday
Books I’ve read today: The Sound and the Fury and The Pirates! in an Adventure with Moby Dick by Gideon Defoe.
Pages I’ve read today: 38 pages of The Sound and the Fury and 106 so far of the other.
Comments: Today I seem to have misinterpreted the aim of 'bout of books' as an excuse to buy every single book I lay eyes upon. Today, so far, I haven't read much, but I have 12 new books TO BE READ and surely that's just as good, right? :D I've given up on The Sound and the Fury, I just hated it. Yay Pirates! Not had much time for reading today though, with travelling and doctor's appointments.
Today in six words: Wine doesn't help understand Faulkner. Damn.

Books I’ve read today: The Pirates! in an Adventure with Moby Dick (FINISHED!) and Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.
Pages I’ve read today: 126 and 87 (as of 10:20pm) respectively.
Comments: Yay, I'm onto my first free-choice book! Probably the only one to be fair, as Jurassic Park is quite long and full of tiny font. I'm enjoying it though, so I don't really mind. Not got a whole lot of reading done because of my charity shop shift, but I'm pretty much planning to spend tomorrow in bed, so hopefully I can make more of a dint in Jurassic Park. I'm loving this read-a-thon, I wish there was one every month!

Books I’ve read today: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
Pages I’ve read today: 239, so far. It's only 6:20pm though, so hopefully I'll get through some more.
Comments: Pfft, I'm having a really sleepy day today, so I keep dozing off while trying to read! I'm loving Jurassic Park though. I think I'll probably be with this one until the end of Bout of Books as it's quite long with tiny font, but that's okay. Oh, and I did Mini-Challenge #5. Best. Challenge. Ever.

Comments: Yay, I finished another book! :D I figured I'd still be reading Jurassic Park at the end of the read-a-thon, but I just finished it. Another book down! Also started The Devil and Miss Prym, which has been on my TBR for nearly a year.

Three is a realistic goal. I loved In Leah's Wake. I don't read a lot of contemporary fiction and it was a nice change of pace. Good luck and have fun!

YES! I was hoping that between me and Charlotte, we might nudge you into signing up. Now we can have a BOOK PARTAY for a WHOLE WEEK, woohoo! To keep it concise: Good books, non-fiction should be fine for a read-a-thon longer than 24 hours, and OMG I've nearly finished my Pirates! book and I can't wait to read more! Carry on... :D
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't necessarily say it's a bad idea to read non-fiction for a readathon, it just has to be, like with all books really, well written non fiction! And also- have fun with your very first readathon! I'm going to be watching everyone's Bout of Books progress without actually participating, although I still might make an effort to read more than I normally do. Maybe...

ReplyDeleteProps for even attempting Faulkner, I haven't tried since college, and that experience was promptly forgotten. You are also way ahead of me as well. I need to lock the computer away to get more reading accomplished.

Booooo to being poorly! Do you know what's sad? When I read your tweets when I'm stuck in an office in Leeds and you're out buying books in Leeds...it makes me want to throw away my keyboard and/or phone and run out into the streets with a big carrier bag and my debit card!

DeleteOh, I love the image of us striding out of Waterstones with three poor young shop assistants running after us carrying our bags. *Dramatic pause as we stop outside the door, strike a pose, don our sunglasses and wiggle away down the street. Cut to the inside of the shop, with the manager flat out on a table being offered sips of brandy, and three leftover books sitting on a shelf looking lost* :D
ReplyDeleteYou've done AWESOME this week Miss Hanna! There's some kind of reada-a-thonny thing on LT on a regular basis. It started after I did one on the blog, and everyone got interested and wanted to do more. I was hosting 24-hour read-a-thons EVERY SINGLE WEEK at one point. When I was off Tuesdays and Wednesdays over winter we'd read 8pm Monday to 8pm Tuesday, then I'd have Wednesday to recover before work the next day! I think someone else took over and they still run them quite regularly, different length ones...
