IMM #35 - including Cinder, The Paris Wife, Zoology and more!

I know, I know - this post, like many others, is horribly late. Normally I'd have let it go and tacked it on the end of this Sunday's IMM, but I'm hoping to a) have a lot of birthday books on Saturday and b) be horribly hungover on Sunday, so I figured it was probably best to just force this one out.

Sorry for the crappy picture. That's not the complete total either, I'm afraid - I had to leave a load at my boyfriend's because I just couldn't drag them home. In my defence, this is over the last few weeks so it's not like I bought them all yesterday.

On the other hand, if you look to your right (*tour guide voice*) you'll see my TBR total for July, which may have gone up by 26. Twenty six. That means that I've somehow obtained more than 26 books this month, which is really, really bad. I swear that August will have a downward arrow.

Anyway. Books.

I was left to fend for myself in a library different from our local one while The Boy was at a job interview and, uhh... it didn't end well. The library trip, not the interview. That library in general is fairly crap (you know the type - it has more computers than books), but the fantasy section was more than acceptable.

I've read Touch of Power already, but I've heard great things about Theft of Swords. I think I've been in a fantasy mood lately, but I've been stuck with non-fiction and chunky classics so I haven't had chance to indulge.

These are my only full price books - the first Anno Dracula book, bought because I accidentally bought the second one in the series and I doubt it would make much sense.

Ahh, Red Glove. I absolutely adored White Cat when I read it last week and my Mum bought me the second one to cheer me up after a particularly irritating hospital appointment. This will be the very first book I get to after my current batch of review books, I swear.

I'm really excited about A Discovery of Witches too. I won a copy of the second book and it's been killing me not to read it, so I hunted round Bradford a copy of this one yesterday. Harder to find than you'd think, by the way.

It's charity shops that have been my downfall, I think. Between working at British Heart Foundation and daily walking through the charity shop-infested town... it's not so healthy.

On the bright side, A Streetcar Named Desire is on my Project Fill in the Gaps and after the amazing We Bought A Zoo, I'll pretty much read anything with a zoo worker in.

Blame Ellie for these. I read her post about her brilliant haul from The Works and, uhh.... toddled off and bought exactly the same books! Ahem.

These are ReaditSwapit trades. I just finished An Utterly Exasperated History of Modern Britain by John O'Farrell for this month's Random Reads, and especially loved the political side, so I couldn't resist trying for his anti-Conservative tirade, Things Can Only Get Better. Well no, they can't, as you end up with David Cameron, but hey ho.

Nearly there! The Assassin's Curse was sent to me for review, Shadow of Night is a signed copy that I won in a giveaway over at Curiosity Killed the Bookworm and This Is Not A Test was sent to me by Vonnie as a RAK.

I'm stupidly excited about that last one - I've been wanting to read it for ages now.

Argh, I can't wait to get stuck in to some of these! I haven't got through nearly enough books this month as I was reading Anna Karenina, which is obviously huge and quite complex, and then a non-fiction history book, so they took up quite a lot of time between them.

Tune in next week for the Birthday Edition!

  1. Streetcar is amazing. Have you seen the film? Marlon Brando is awesome as Stanley! Speaking of birthdays, I *may* need your address again.. For like the tenth time... :-/

    1. No, I haven't read it or seen the film before, although I'm intrigued now I know it has Marlon Brando in it!

      I've e-mailed you :)

    2. Yay! And Vivien Leigh. Marlon Brando is just pure smouldering (mostly shirtless) rage. It's brilliant.

  2. So excited for the Birthday edition! I agree with Bex, Streetcar is TOTALLY amazing, and the film is pretty awesome too! Also, I have Shutter Island to read too! I keep being reminded of it/Dennis Lehane in general, so maybe it's a sign that I should read it!

  3. That's a lot of books! I really enjoyed The Language of Flowers, hope you get a chance to read it before you have to return it. And I have The Paris Wife waiting for me too, it's supposed to be good.

  4. Okay, now I totally need to find a copy of Streetcar on DVD. I think I had the book somewhere, but I might have given it to the shop, nooooo! Whenever I do these things it always comes back to bite me on the ass. :(

HOO-BLOODY-RAY for The Works-based corruption. I love it. For God's sake don't go on the website, they have so much awesome 3-for-£5/3-for-£10/miraculously-£2.99 stuff going down right now, I can hardly stand it. Very jealous about Cinder. And Shutter Island. I Must Not Buy Any More Books, I Must Not Buy Any More Books...

Can't wait for the birthday edition next week! :D

    1. What, you mean like when I turn up at the shop and demand you take several of them back home again? :)

Oh God, don't. I'm DETERMINED that my August TBR thingy will have a downward arrow by the end of the month. DETERMINED, damn it. It was +26 for July...

  5. Ooh, yey - I got This Is Not A Test too this week! Although by "got", I mean ordered from Amazon after I'd had a drink, forgot about it and woke up the next morning to a 'Thank you for your order' email and now I'm waiting for it to be delivered...I'm excited about it though and at least I didn't order something more expensive while under the influence!

I've had Discovery of Witches AGES ago but just haven't ever got round to reading it. It's so very long and something about the synopsis reminds me about The Historian and even though I did really like that in the end, I remember it taking me a really long time to get through.

I've seen the film of Shutter Island and I'm jealous that you have the book. And I'm pretty sure that you mentioned it in your review that I read but shamefully didn't comment on but Holly Black's books do have the best covers!

Oh, and also: downward arrow in the same month as your birthday?! I hate to be a party pooper but that is just not going to happen. I'm just keepin' it real! :)

    Although YEY BIRTHDAYS!!!

    1. (Huh...that's longer and more random than it seemed while I was typing it! Oops :-s)

    2. The last part made me laugh. But IT IS going to happen! If I end up with ↑26 books the month when it ISN'T my birthday, can you imagine how terrifying the number would be if I didn't reign it in!?

*whispers* Yeah, it's probably not going to happen.

Oh oh! Drunk Amazon orders! Similarly, I tend to browse Amazon on my phone when I can't sleep, so I'm usually a bit groggy and drugged up and then *click* It's a nice surprise in the morning though :)

I can't decide which I want to read more - A Discovery of Witches or This Is Not A Test. I've got two review books due up this week (and then that's until until October, thank the Lord!), but then after that I'm getting stuck in to BOTH of those. The former didn't really appeal, but I've seen loads of glowing reviews from bloggers I trust, so... *bows down to peer pressure*

I haven't seen the film yet, but I know there's some crazy twist? That's another book I'm dying to get to though! I wrote about the covers in my review? I did? Really? :s Wow, my memory is SHOCKING.

And I LIKE long and random!

  6. Great haul! I can't wait to read This is Not a Test. It looks so good & I love the cover! I love the Maze Runner series. I can't wait to read The Kill Order.

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  7. How have I only just seen this post? Spose I've been more absent than I thought.

Anyway.. think my Showcase Sunday this week (2 weeks worth, thank god) is just as bad... wait... birthday post?!
