Bout of Books 11.0 Wrap-up

Bout of Books

Books I've read from:
The Dinner by Herman Koch (309 pages)
The 100: Day 21 by Kass Morgan (311 pages)
Poirot Investigates by Agatha Christie (150 pages)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling (172 pages)
Running total:
2 and two halves books, 942 pages

While this isn't quite as good as I hoped for, it's still a damn sight better than the reading I've been doing recently. I've had a lot of success with the books I've chosen to read, which always helps.

I finished The Dinner while standing in line to meet Sarah J. Maas (which I wrote a whole post about) and then flopped down on a sofa when I got home and started reading the closest book to me, which was The 100: Day 21. It's possibly even better than the first book.

I began Poirot Investigates on Friday evening, but then I spent almost an hour looking at Harry Potter on Pinterest (for some reason) and then I was overcome with a desperate urge to read one of the books... and here we are.

I didn't manage to read at all on Saturday, but that's the day I went out with Ellie and Charlotte. We'd decided that we'd head to the huge Waterstones for an hour and then invade Charlotte's house and demand that she feed us, which we did.

Waterstones was a pretty successful trip for me. I came out with:

The Man Who Couldn't Stop: OCD and the true story of a life lost in thought by David Adam
Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira
It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

I feel like there may also have been another one but I can't remember... Anyway, the usual shenanigans of when more than two of us congregate in the same bookshop occurred, although at least this time there was no squabbling over one copy of the same book.

Ellie was actually the most restrained of all of us for a change, although she does have a habit of automatically purchasing any book that has made its way into her basket, whether she put it there or not.

Me: OH ELLIE, LOOK AT THAT! *points dramatically into the distance and shoves book into Ellie's basket*
Ellie: Oh, what!? *turns away and searches for what she should be looking at*
Charlotte: Yes, what!? *moves aside and also searches for the imaginary object of interest*
Me: ... seriously?

And then she bought the damn book anyway. Ever seriously consider the mental wellbeing of your friends?

So we bought books and then retired to Charlotte's house, who I can no longer be friends with. I mean, she was right to apologise about that fireplace... which I can't remember even noticing but she frequently and determinedly apologised for. I mean, seriously, I just don't see how we can be friends after that.

We had an awesome afternoon. You know those days where everytime you look at the clock, two hours seems to have passed? It was brilliant.

Then I got home and... went to bed. That's how I roll.

I managed to read a little yesterday when Lewis was playing Titanfall, but not that much. However, considering that this week I met one of my favourite authors and spent a day with two of my best friends, I think it's been a great Bout of Books overall!

  1. Ha - your post and mine are basically next to each other on the wrap-up list! Great minds, blah blah...

I totally also just replied on Ellie's blog but I think it bear's repeating that that fireplace is not cool. One day, Hanna, one day that will be fixed! Sadly fires are quite expensive though :| I've said it basically everywhere but it was the best day! Next time, I'll make sure that I keep a proper eye on whatever I'm about to feed you and also that I will try to have shelves for you both to look at, rather than boxes that also happen to double up as the PERFECT hiding places!

ALSO, I was sorting washing in the utility room yesterday and Andy came in and was like "This box is looking weird" and I basically thought the moment of realisation had come now that it's excessively full despite being barely full when it went in there and then he was like "I don't know why we have books in the utility room. It's weird" and the world carried on as normal. PHEWF!!

    1. I feel like I've said this in a lot of places now, but YOUR FIREPLACE IS FINE, CHARLOTTE. Pleasant, even. In fact, it's now THE BEST DAMN FIREPLACE IN THE WORLD. So DEAL with it.

Nah, shelves are a bad idea unless you want us to spend literally the whole time going, "Charlotte, read this. Oh and this. But NOT this, ugh."

Haha, that's amazing. How did you resist the urge to wander around looking smug for the rest of the day?

  2. I am now intrigued about Charlotte's horrible fireplace now you've all mentioned it. What is the great mystery of the fireplace?

Yay for books and friends who can't be trusted in a bookshop together. Sounds like you had a wonderful day.

    1. Charlotte doesn't have a horrible fireplace - she has a PERFECTLY LOVELY FIREPLACE. Only because it's not the colour she wants it to be eventually, it apparently qualifies as horrible because HOUSE ANXIETY.

    2. Charlotte has a lovely HOUSE, never mind the fireplace.

Katie, if you could see her house you would understand how insignificant that 'horrible' fireplace really is!

Oh, we totally can't be trusted. We're enablers :)

  4. Nooooo, there had to have been more books than that! Because I bought five and I was apparently more restrained than you! Maybe it was because you bought the hardback one and I didn't find any of the hardcovers I wanted, so CHEAPER. And hey, hey, hey, remember that time I put a book back on the shelf LIKE I HAVE NEVER DONE EVER? Remind me of that occasionally, it was a proud moment for me.

I do feel quite pleased that I bought one book the same as you and made you buy two more. That makes me happy. I wish I'd bought Wildfell Hall as well though, then we'd all three have the same one from the same place ON THE SAME DAY and for some reason that would have been amazing. :)

Also, by 'more than two' you mean 'at least two' right? Because I'm fairly sure this happens every time you come to Chesterfield as well, and we can't blame Charlotte for that. No matter how much she might try to apologise for it. IT EVEN RAINED THAT ONE TIME! IT WAS CHARLOOOOOTTTTTTE!

Oh, and Bout of Books happened as well, right? Good going on that too, you read loads more than me! I barely even topped my general weekly page goal, ooooops. :(

    1. Hmm, Blogger didn't altert me to this comment so it was a nice surprise to stumble across it... Hi Ellie! :)

We had the same amount of books, but the OCD one was £16.99 so there was that :/ That's more than the cost of two paperbacks, you know! Oh please, you only put it back because I forced you to! Actually, that evens out sneaking that book into your basket... although I use the word 'sneaking' loosely!

I feel good because I bought one book that you bought and one that Charlotte bought too. Symmetry is fun :) Maybe I should get cracking on that OCD book...

Everything is Charlotte's fault. We know that now.

      Bout of... what, now?

    2. FORCED ME TO? As I recall, your exact words were, "Either you buy this book, or you go look for another book in the BOGOHP offer". And my response was, "No, I'm going to put this one back and maybe look at the classics again." And you were like, "WHAAAAAAT WHO ARE YOU?!" You've probably blocked that part out of your memory, it was quite traumatic for all involved. :P

I just got the OCD book out of the library. :)
