In Which Hanna and Ellie Go Slightly Crazy...

Everybody, meet Ellie (left) and Hanna (right). They are Bad People.

Although they are responsible for single-handedly rebooting the bookish economy of Chesterfield, they also left a trail of debris and sobbing Waterstones employees behind them. Hanna threatened to return and stalk a friendly charity shop volunteer until she read a particular book about exploding chipmunks (which Ellie then bought, for some reason best known to herself), while Ellie alarmed several well-intentioned figures of authority by mumbling about how if she disappeared, it was because her mother had killed her.

A reward of £500 is available for the capture of these Crazy People. Chances are, however, that they will just spend it on books.

Don't you just love staring at a huge pile of new books that you've just spent a day buying? It helps that all but two of the above books are brand new, as well. When Ellie and I went shopping in Leeds with Charlotte, most of my purchases ended up being from charity shops, but today Waterstones and WH Smiths did me proud.

It did help that I had £90 in book vouchers, of which I spent £70. It's good because I get to stroke my books with only the tiniest feeling of guilt.

Right, Ellie?

*smirks*

Anyway. We started off in a little indie remainder bookstore, where I bought The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown and Ellie bought five books. No, I don't know what, but let's just focus on the quantity for now,

Then we hit Waterstones, where I veered right and Ellie veered left... which meant I snatched up the very last copy of Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, and so Ellie did an adorable little pouty face. Well, not really. But I wouldn't have given her the book even if she had. Mwa hahaha!

I also bought Crown of Midnight, which I read as a NetGalley but loved so much that I had to own a copy. I'd been eyeing up The President's Hat for a while and Horns made it into the basket because of the Daniel Radcliffe film coming out soon, and obviously I'd like to read it before watching it. A Thousand Pardons was a complete whim because it had a pretty 1920s style cover, but hey ho.

Then we trailed back to WH Smiths, despite already having walked past it twice. Lesson of the day: never trust Ellie's and Hanna's sense of direction. She is almost completely responsible for the fall-out in there though - not only did she draw my attention to Longbourn, an amazing-looking retelling of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of the servants, but she also pointed out Tampa... whose cover we absolutely do not need to discuss.

I can't really blame her for The Haunted Book. But I bought it anyway. I'm like that.

Lastly (for me!) I bought a copy of The Lies of Locke Lamora from a charity shop, as I borrowed it from the library and really enjoyed it. I even did a little squeal as I spotted it from across the shop.

So those were my books. Do you know how heavy eleven books are? Answer: even heavier when you then have to get a train, walk across town to collect your boyfriend's house keys, walk to the bus stop and then walk a mile uphill to get home! Today my shoulders and back are killing.

It was ridiculously worth it though. I love Ellie and we had an amazing day. Sometimes I forget how easy some bloggers are to talk to -  seeing their words on a screen every day just isn't the same.

    1. Not yet, but I have reserved it at the library! I struggled to get into it for ages and ages, but once I had it was amazing. The ending is all kinds of perfect and... argh. So good.

      What's the second one like?

  2. Horns is amazing, and I can't wait to see the film.

I'm so jealous of your bookish, bloggy day - looks like you both had a blast!

    1. Is it? Oh, great! I didn't know anybody else who'd read it, so I feel better now :)

  3. Squeeee! The Lies of Locke Lamora. Read it recently, loved it, want ALL the people to read it now. And you're right, we do not need to discuss that Tampa cover. Ugh, creepy much?

    Sounds like ya'll had a blast :)

    1. I loved it too, although it took me a REALLY long time to get into. It was definitely, definitely worth it though.

We did! Even if my back and shoulders are regretting it now :)

  4. OH HOLY SHIT HANNA. You got the picture of me LAUGHING and I look like a FRICKIN' MANIAC. People of the blogosphere: I DO NOT LOOK LIKE THAT. :)

*snorts* I do know how heavy eleven books are, because I bought NEARLY THREE TIMES AS MANY. I'm not even sure if I dare post my book haul, because when my mum sees it she will not only KILL me but I'll probably go home one day to find her pulling a Fahrenheit 451 in the garden... :(

The cover of Tampa is seriously cringy. I still want Mr Penumbra... I wonder if the WHS at the airport would have it? I knew EXACTLY where WHS was in town, I just didn't know you wanted to GO there or we'd have DONE IT EARLIER. And I love you too, obviously. And aaaaall the books. But mostly you. :D

    1. THAT'S A NICE PICTURE ELLIE. What's wrong with it? At least you look happy in yours! I just look smug. I always look smug in photos. Always.

I'm seriously tempted to bring my roll-y suitcase next time. I ended up leaving most of my books at Lewis' (minus Longbourn and Mr Penumbra) and I'll have to back for them with my suitcase anyway, so next time if I bring it along I'll get to take my books straight home! :D

Yeah, I have NO idea how you carried yours. I'm practically a cripple right now.

Yes, Ellie. I'm sure the airport WILL have it. Then you can take it on holiday ALONG WITH THE 94 OTHER BOOKS YOU ARE TAKING. Just put it down and walk away. Walk AWAY.

    2. You WOULD look smug though, wouldn't you - YOU'RE SITTING THERE WITH MY BOOK! It's a good thing you took that one with you really, I was all ready to launch a Mission Impossible-style raid on Sheffield to get it back. :P

Ironically, that Tuesday and the next day, my hip/back actually held up better that has in ages, and I haven't had to use the flame cane these past couple of days... BOOK SHOPPING REALLY IS THERAPEUTIC.

Also, I would like to point out that my 'definitely taking' pile of books is currently only sitting at five. FOR NOW. ;)

    3. No no. I'm actually sat there with MY book, I think you'll find. And get it 'back?' Puh-lease, you never even TOUCHED it :)

      Go on then, which five?

  5. But should we talk about the cover of Tampa, though? Cause it FREAKS ME OUT! But also I kind of want to stick my finger in it and WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! (Don't answer that. You were right, we never should have talked about it.)

Also, you got a Stephen King's child book! You're getting along with the whoooole family! (I mean, I'm just assuming you'll get along with it. It might suck but I hear different!)

In conclusion, next time I am coming tooooooo. Yes, I just invited myself along. No worries.

    1. I DID PUT MY FINGER IN IT. I actually poked it in the shop, whilst doing an odd little squinty face. Warped minds think alike.

(I totally misspelt that as 'warped mings' by accident and then I cried with laughter because it was so grossly appropriate....)

      I bought a what now?

      *googles*

Oh no way, Joe Hill is Stephen King's son! To be fair, that is totally non-obvious :/

Whoop! The more the merrier. And the more bookshop staff cry.

    2. BAHAHAHA, god that made me laugh. I DID NOT SEE YOU... *cough*... um, TOUCHING that cover. My first few choices of wording weren't so innocent, it took me a while to find the right one. YOU TWO ARE SO DIRTY AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE YOUUUU.

*quietly pushed Heart-Shaped Box up the TBR pile, and not just because it's also the name of a Nirvana song*

  6. Ugh, that Tampa cover! It is... troubling.

What an amazing book haul! I want "Horns" (have had an eye on that since it was first published but somehow haven't managed to acquire it yet. Must rectify that... *looks at to-read piles*... well, soon enough. Also "Longbourn" is on my wishlist.

You both look lovely and very pleased with yourselves. I don't blame you. Amazing shopping spree!

    1. Hahahahahahaha, I literally just told Ellie that I always look smug in photos and now you've told me I look pleased with myself! I KNEW it! :)

Eh, I always pretend my TBR pile doesn't exist when I go shopping. Much more fun that way!
