Alcohol and chicken pox don't mix.
So this is actually a combination post for Thursday and Friday, as last night I was at the BPTC Summer Ball. I'll post a photo as soon as I find one that doesn't make me look like a scrawny boy (although someone told me I looked like a Nordic princess, and I'll admit that pretty much made my night). I actually had a good time - it's rare we're all together while not frantically scrawling statute numbers on an exam paper, so it was fun to mess about and drink for an evening.
EDIT: I found some non-boy photographs. I had my hair pinned-up that fell down the second I started dancing. It appears that was the cause of my male-to-female transformation, thankfully.

I like this one for the simple reason that I look like a ghost.
In addition, I do so love dancing in my heels long after everybody else has kicked theirs off :) "Well Hanna, you're used to them!"

Only the exertion does seem to have kicked off my chickenpox today. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it made an appearance after the Ball, but I really do not feel well one tiny little bit. It's getting quite bad now, so it's clearly going to be a few days in bed. I should still be able to post updates though, so you haven't got away with it just yet!
Reading-wise... I finished Don't Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life yesterday and then started Inferno by Dan Brown. Despite all the vehement hatred I've seen, it's actually pretty good. His writing isn't that bad - taking a few sentences out of context to snigger at them doesn't really give you the feel of the book at all and you wouldn't think twice if you saw them in another book.
I even managed to post a review! My target was five over this week, so completing one is hardly an accomplishment but it's a start. I should be able to do one tomorrow and one Sunday though, so I guess I'll have to be happy with three!

ReplyDeleteHmm.. you did make me think. Imagine if Dan Brown published under a pseudonym. Nobody knew it was Dan Brown. Would the hate still be a thing? He was quite popular when I was about 17.
I don't now. I didn't then either, after my hair had fallen down :p
DeleteThat's an interesting idea. Shame he's unlikely to go to the effort of writing an entire book, just to publish it under a fake name. I didn't realise how resented he was until Inferno was released.

DeleteYeah, pretty much. My English Lit teacher used to belittle his writing, that's what first put me off him. Then finding about 10 copies per week of Da Vinci Code in the charity shop *twitch* though that's not Dan Brown's fault. But I don't understand why people are being so mean to people who actually like his books.. *shrug* Each to their own! :D (that's a cliché I actually like)

ReplyDeleteI find it odd how it's OK to snigger over lines from less popular authors though... but having a laugh over Dan Brown makes you out to be anti-people-reading-for fun. Which I'm not. This week was full of people being a bit horrible to me on Twitter (no one I know, just randoms). I've read extracts of his other books though and they didn't inspire me to read a whole one. I mean my current read is annoying me a bit by random use of exclamation marks so I don't think I could cope with his brand of descriptive writing.

ReplyDeleteI hope the chicken pox doesn't hit too hard - or at least, that you get a RELATIVELY comfortable few days recovering (DON'T make me come up there and tie your hands up so you can't scratch at it) - and I'm delighted that you're enjoying Inferno. I haven't read The Lost Symbol yet, for some reason, but I'm really looking forward to Inferno - it sounds like another interesting idea and they're always rip-roaring reads, whatever the snobs say. :)
I wasn't all that fond of The Lost Symbol, but then American history isn't really my kind of thing. But Ellie, Inferno is AMAZING. Please go read it. I love it so.
DeleteActually, I've been lucky. The chickenpox (well, actually it was rediagnosed as measles) has hit quite hard, but not so much with the itchiness, which is a silver lining. I can deal with general illness, but NOT with incessant itching!
That is a GORGEOUS dress and you look BEAUTIFUL! :) I'm always jealous of people who can look so lovely in white. I have dark hair and quite fair skin so if I put on white, I look like I've died...which is going to be awkward if I ever get married! Also, "Nordic princess" is THE nicest compliment I've ever heard!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing what you think of Inferno! I read The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and...another one at uni and actually really enjoyed them *ducks and hides from angry mob* I read The Lost Symbol though and wasn't that big a fan. Something about the theme (can you call it a theme? Idea?) just didn't particularly grab me, I don't think. So I'm basically going to base whether or not I go for Inferno on your opinion!

DeleteI wasn't that big a fan of The Lost Symbol either, so I wasn't sure what to expect with Inferno. Maybe my low expectations helped, but It's Amazing. I don't care about the angry mob, they can go shove their snobbiness where The Sun Doth Not Shine because I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Yeah, I know what you mean by 'theme.' It wasn't really my kind of thing either. What was it, American history? I can't really remember.
Haha, if you look at the group photo above, you can see how much paler I am than everyone else! I wasn't sure I could pull white off either, but the dress was really silky and felt lovely so I decided to wear it anyway :)
