Top Ten Tuesday - Hanna's Spring TBR 2013

Well we've finally come full circle - I completed a Top Ten Tuesday TBR for Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter last year (and even actually read a few of the books on them) and now we're back at Spring again.

This is my absolute favourite Top Ten Tuesday to do - I love planning out the next few months. Guess that means it's time to stop stroking my summer dresses lovingly and think about what I'm actually going to read!

1) Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

Delirium actually features on quite a few of my 2012 TBR lists, but I feel justified in using Pandemonium for this one considering I've actually, genuinely, finally read the first book. I'm halfway through a review, so watch this space!

I was sent this and Requiem for review, so I'll definitely be picking it up shortly. Thinking about it, it may just be the very next book!

2) The Art Forger by Barbara Shapiro

This arrived this morning and it's absolutely stunning. I'd forgotten all about it because I ordered it from Amazon Marketplace with a whole load of other stuff... and then promptly forgot about it as it was being shipped from the US.

I just could not stop stroking it. It's hardback with a matte dust-jacket and it's in perfect condition. I love novels about art history and painting, so this book couldn't be more perfect for me.

It doesn't seem to be a big thing around the blog world, but drop me a comment if you've read it!

3) The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier

Another review book and another novel that I'm dying to read.

I've read and loved every single one of Tracy Chevalier's books, from Girl with a Pearl Earring to Remarkable Creatures, the latter being my absolute favourite. Whilst I admit that 1850s Ohio wouldn't normally appeal, I thoroughly believe that Ms Chevalier could make dust interesting. It wouldn't be the first time that I've become curious about a topic simply because it was the topic of a fiction book.

1850s Ohio, you say? Well, alrighty then!

4) The Selection by Kiera Cass
I've read mixed reviews about this one, but that's only made me more curious! I heard a rumour that they're making it into a TV show or a film - I know that it wouldn't be for a very long time yet, but I'd like to read it before the hype starts at least.

I'm not usually a fan of girl-in-pretty-dress books but The Selection has a synopsis that hooked me in the first time I read it. I might read this for light relief between my Law exams.

5) Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson

I know, I know, I missed the boat on this one.

Thing is, when there was all the hype surrounding this, I just wasn't in a thriller/psychological-mystery mood. Now I've read and fallen in love with Gone Girl (yes, there will be a review. Yes, I am horribly behind), I'm hungry for more!

I know there are a few plot holes, but in a book about memory-loss it's only to be expected and I can deal with that. I can't see it being anywhere near as good as Gone Girl, but I've got a hankering for it regardless.

6) The Dinosaur Hunters: A True Story of Scientific Rivalry and the Discovery of the Prehistoric World by Deborah Cadbury

Like I said above, Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier is one of my favourite books and it features fossil-hunting and the discovering of never-before-seen prehistoric creatures.

I've wanted to read more ever since and I've had this non-fiction book on my wishlist ever since. I recently finally bought it cheaply from Marketplace, but haven't got to it yet due to my desperate need for light reading. Soon though, I swear!
7) The Black Prism by Brent Weeks

I have absolutely no idea why I haven't read this yet. I've read the full Night Angel trilogy twice now and would recommend it to anybody who even slightly enjoys fantasy. The word 'amazing' was practically invented for that series.

The Black Prism is the beginning of a whole new series, but I really can't see it being anything but excellent. If it's even half as good as the Durzo Blint books, I'll be happy.

And you know, my copy is signed :)

8) A Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass

Another Hanna's TBR List veteran!

I don't know why I haven't read this one yet - I was so excited about it when I bought it, and to be honest, I still kind of am.

It's about a young girl who has synthesisia, a condition that may have plagued Van Gogh and a few other famous artists. It can be experienced in many different forms, but one of the most common is associating numbers with different scents or 'seeing' music in an array of different colours.

It's fascinating and although this book is fiction, I can't wait to learn more.

9) Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

This probably doesn't even count for this Top Ten Tuesday, considering I've read it at least twice before, but hey ho. You'll survive.

Rereading this book hadn't even crossed my mind until about two minutes ago, when I was trawling through my picture storage for the A Mango Shaped Space cover because I'd been a moron and not labelled it correctly.

Suddenly I saw the cover to the left and now I desperately want to read it RIGHT NOW THIS MINUTE. You know how an intense yearning can come over you for a particular book, and you can feel it right down in your stomach? Yeah, that.

10) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

I actually own a box-set of Paulo Coelho's works; despite that, I've only ever read The Devil and Miss Prym and Veronika Decides to Die. Both of those were before the purchase of the box-set too.

However, I have it on good authority that The Alchemist is by far the best of his works and I'm willing to try it out! I have to start somewhere in my box-set, it may as well be there!

What books will you be reading this Spring?

  1. I love Remarkable Creatures too and have her new one to review as well. I'm also interested in seeing what you think of that non-fiction book. I have seen The Art Firger around a bit a while ago, probably on US blogs though. Think I decided to pass for some reason.

Loved Before I Go To Sleep and Can You Keep a Secret? I kinda liked The Selection although it has loads of flaws it IS fun. Looks like you've got some fantastic reading ahead of you!

  2. I've been on the fence about reading The Selection. I always fall for the hype, and my book goal for 2013 is to stop falling for it. But I'm getting off track aren't I? I haven't heard of the other books on your list, but I'm heading over to goodreads right now. :)

Stop by my Top Ten list at Read. Sleep. Repeat.

    1. I see your point about hype, but I usually do the opposite and decided hyped-up books must be awful and avoid them like the plague! It's why I never seem to have read books that my real-life friends have! I need to stop doing that, to be honest.

  3. I really want to read The Last Runaway and The Selection. I really liked Chevalier's Girl with the Pearl earring!

  4. I just love your list!
I started The last Runaway today, I'm 20% in according to my kindle and so far I am really enjoying it. I didn't know much about the Quakers so I'm learning too.
The Dinosaur Hunters looks really interesting, I've added it to my wishlist.

  5. Remarkable Creatures is about fossil-hunting and the discovering of never-before-seen prehistoric creatures? Huh. I don't think I knew that! I read a book by Tracy Chevalier about a poet (?)...I think maybe it was Burning Bright. I did *really* enjoy it and yet I've never read anything else by her. Remarkable Creatures it is!

Before I Go To Sleep is worth reading. It does have holes (like you said) but they're not huge and it's still a really good read. Maybe not quite of Gone Girl levels, but really good :)

Oh, oh, and The Black Prism! I have that too and I have no idea why I haven't read it yet...maybe it's because it is signed and therefore inferior? Actually, I think it's because I was hanging on until the second was out in paperback so that I could get it straight away!

    1. Charlotte, don't you OWN Remarkable Creatures!? Yes, Burning Bright is about... Robert Blake? The 'tyger tyger, burning bright' man, anyway.

Ugh. Come over here and review Gone Girl for me? It's next up and it's going to be so difficult to review!

Funnily enough, I didn't buy it until the second book was out either, although it MAY have been because I wanted Brent Weeks to sign his old books and it felt cheeky to ask him without buying his new one as well... *coughs sheepishly*
