Top Ten Tuesday - Hanna's Summer TBR
Wow. It feels like only yesterday I was writing a Top Ten Tuesday about my Spring TBR! Actually, I did better than I expected with that - normally when I make a list I end up completely disregarding everything on it, but I managed to read half of them, which is fine by me!
So, this is what I'd like to get through this summer -
1) Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson
I picked this up completely on a whim in Waterstones last week, having never heard of it before, and now I want to read it more than anything else I own. It seems like a memoir-type thing, in a similar style to How To Be A Woman. From a quick flick through, it looks just as hilarious too!
I may also be able to use it for Ellie's Mixing It Up! challenge, in the Journalism category. I've been struggling with ideas for it, but Jenny Lawson has been writing The Bloggess blog for years now and this book is drawn from that.
2) The Pirates! in an Adventure with Communists by Gideon Defoe
Surprise! There's a Pirates! book on here! Betcha didn't see THAT one coming...
Despite how much I adored The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists and ...Moby Dick, I haven't let myself read this one yet. I'm trying to space them out a little so I'm not left bereft and sad too early.
That said, it's highly unlikely I'm going to be able to last out the summer, so there we are :)
3) Meet Me At the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan
I've had the urge to read this for a couple of weeks now, but other books keep getting in the way. I've been pretty good at limiting my review books and library books, but they all seem to have popped up right when there's a particular book I want to be getting on with!
I've heard great things about this one and I can't wait to satisfy my chick-lit craving.
4) Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling
Despite loathing the original UK version of The Office with a terrifying passion, I think the US one is easily one of the best TV shows to ever grace our screens. It's hilarious, with some great jokes and some even greater characters.
Mindy Kaling is one of those characters. She plays Kelly, a fashion and celebrity obsessed gossip queen, but she has also been one of the writers from the start. This memoir-type book is a look at her childhood, career and her time at The Office and promises to be every bit as funny as the show.
5) Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
And now for a respectable book that isn't pink.
I got about halfway through Anna Karenina when I was about seventeen, but got distracted by a shiny object. Now, with the movie coming out in September and the need to strike it off my Fill in the Gaps list, the time has finally come.
6) One Day by David Nicholls
Okay, so yes, this was also on my Spring TBR list. But it will happen this time! I'm not sure why I haven't gotten round to it yet as I do really want to read it. I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about it, and I need to get through it so I can watch the film and shudder at Anne Hathaway's terrible accent :)
The ending worries me though... I need happy endings like a fat kid needs donuts, and I've heard this one has a slightly dubious one.
7) Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
Right, look. I hate Pride and Prejudice editions as much as anybody else, but I am strangely intrigued by this one. Not only will it look nice next to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on the allocated shelf, it also genuinely sounds like a decent read.
It seems to be written in Jane Austen's tone and language, and also the characterisation seems intact. Well, you know, aside from Wickham getting murdered, and that's hardly a great loss is it?
8) Scott Pilgrim vs the World: Precious Little Life Vol. 1 by Bryan Lee O'Malley
I only bought this a few days ago, but I've already flicked through it three times. I adored the movie and it seems like they stuck pretty closely to the graphic novel.
I know a few people that have read it already and loved it, so this is a definite read for this summer.
9) Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires Book Three) by Rachel Caine
I've gone off teenage vampire books in a huge way, but I bought the entire series about this time last year and they've been glaring at me accusingly ever since.
To be fair, I did really enjoy the first two books when I read them and after seeing Hannah's reviews pop up at Once Upon A Time, I've been meaning to read them for a while. Apparently Midnight Alley is where the series gets 'amazing' instead of just 'good.' I'm actually really looking forward to immersing myself in the series :)
10) Moby Dick by Herman Melville
I don't know why, but I seem to be going through a bit of a nautical phase lately. I want all things piratey and ship-y!
It's a huge book, but one I can't wait to get stuck in to. I recently bought a book called Leviathan about whales across culture and literature, but I figured it would probably be best to read this one first.
So that's my plan for this summer, dear readers! It's a probably wholly inaccurate prediction of the reviews you'll see coming up this summer, so keep checking back :)

I just want to applaud so many of these books! Anna Karenina is SO awesome, and there's nothing better than a big old classic in the summer (I say this having read Gone With The Wind, like, 4 or 5 summers ago. It was pretty awesome.) Also, I SO badly want to read Let's Pretend This Never Happened, but I've kind of bought my full price books for the year... ARGH, what a dilemma! Hehe
ReplyDeleteYou've bought your full price books for the year... and it's only JUNE!? Oh Laura. That wasn't a good plan was it?
DeleteBut still, buy this one anyway :)
I have Let's Pretend This Never Happened sitting on my coffee table. I read the first two pages and was already dying laughing. I can't wait to get to the rest!
ReplyDeleteJenny
Aaactually, I think book 4 is when the series picks up, then it goes down a bit.. then up again! Then down a chunk, then blasts through the roof. 6 and 10 were struggles to read imho but the rest are wheeeeeeeee!
ReplyDeleteI keep looking at Cupcake Cafe, I feel I need more light reads in my life. And yeah what Hannah says, Morganville definitely goes down and I haven't picked it up since....but I trust her.
ReplyDeleteI think Leviathan sounds really interesting even if I don't want to read moby Dick.
Me too. I was thinking of putting together a list of light reads. Anything at all light and fun to read. Recommendations always welcome!
DeleteHow come you don't want to read Moby Dick? Not that it's not perfectly justified, I'm just wondering :)
DeleteI really like the sound of Leviathan too, which is weird considering my severe phobia of fish!
I (obviously) have lots to say about this post, but firstly and most importantly, SCOTT PILGRIM IS AWESOME. In all its forms, and everybody should read the books and watch the film. Over and over again. And then some more. Also read Lost at Sea, which is his other book, about a girl whose soul has been stolen by cats. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteAnyway... I also need to read One Day, as it's been sat on my shelf for aaaaaaages and I don't want to watch the film till I've read it (I actually can't decided if I want to watch the film at all - Anne Hathaway looks all weird in the promo pics, but I'm sure I'll succumb eventually!). And and and, I ridiculously want to read Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me.
Meet Me At The Cupcake Cafe was good - quick, easy, happy making reading with cakes in. If it has food in, I will pretty much automatically like it. She has another book which is loitering around the 2 for £7 stands of evil in Tesco at the moment about a sweetshop. I'm so tempted, especially since The Night Circus is also on the offer, so I'm thinking I could use it as a chance to get yet another person to read it! Obviously, I'm a total genius. lol
Let's Pretend This Never Happened has gone straight on my wishlist because 1) you want to read it, and 2) you compared it to How to be a Woman. You know my feelings about that book, and I will now read pretty much anything that may be even slightly similar. I love Caitlin Moran so much.
Also, I have had too much sugar and am over excited in anticipation of upcoming birthday, so please forgive my overuse of many words, and the hugely rambling length of this comment!! Awesome list.
Oh oh oh, also Anna Karenina is great. I must reread this summer!
Ohhhh this is a good comment :)
DeleteI know, I was thinking of you when I bought Scott Pilgrim actually. In a non-creepy way. It's a horrible cover twice over, as it's got a movie cover AND it's an ex-library. Don't get me wrong, I love the film but I still don't want it on my book! I'll buy a new copy if (read: when) I like it! A girl whose soul has been stolen by cats? I want to read it already.
I know! I 'm dying to read Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and One Day, Well obviously, as they wouldn't be on this list. But I mean, I actually WANT to read them, not just in a 'How can I pad out this list?' way. Which I'd never do. No no.
Something to do with a Sweetshop of Dreams maybe? I heard it's not as good as Cupcake Cafe, which I'm insanely looking forward to.
It even has Caitlin Moran's review of it on the front! It just looks like the same style, the same humour... I'll be reading it very, very soon so I'll let you know.
No no no! I love excitement, sugar, lots of words and rambles, so you're pretty much in my Awesome Book right now :)
My bf looooves the Scott Pilgrim movie. I should get all of the books and surprise him :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd the Mindy Kaling book was a lot of fun! I definitely laughed out loud a couple times.
I'm intrigued by the Pirates book! The title sounds hilarious!
ReplyDeleteScott Pilgrim!!! Mindy Kaling!!! The Bloggess!! Haha.. so many awesome, and fun, books you've got on your list! I just finished Let's Pretend This Never Happened a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it. Loved Mindy's too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my Top 10 Tuesday!
