Top Ten Tuesday - Hanna's Summer TBR

Wow. It feels like only yesterday I was writing a Top Ten Tuesday about my Spring TBR! Actually, I did better than I expected with that - normally when I make a list I end up completely disregarding everything on it, but I managed to read half of them, which is fine by me!

So, this is what I'd like to get through this summer - 

1) Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

I picked this up completely on a whim in Waterstones last week, having never heard of it before, and now I want to read it more than anything else I own. It seems like a memoir-type thing, in a similar style to How To Be A Woman. From a quick flick through, it looks just as hilarious too!

I may also be able to use it for Ellie's Mixing It Up! challenge, in the Journalism category. I've been struggling with ideas for it, but Jenny Lawson has been writing The Bloggess blog for years now and this book is drawn from that.

2) The Pirates! in an Adventure with Communists by Gideon Defoe

Surprise! There's a Pirates! book on here! Betcha didn't see THAT one coming...

Despite how much I adored The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists and ...Moby Dick, I haven't let myself read this one yet. I'm trying to space them out a little so I'm not left bereft and sad too early.

That said, it's highly unlikely I'm going to be able to last out the summer, so there we are :) 

3) Meet Me At the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan

I've had the urge to read this for a couple of weeks now, but other books keep getting in the way. I've been pretty good at limiting my review books and library books, but they all seem to have popped up right when there's a particular book I want to be getting on with!

I've heard great things about this one and I can't wait to satisfy my chick-lit craving. 

4) Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Despite loathing the original UK version of The Office with a terrifying passion, I think the US one is easily one of the best TV shows to ever grace our screens. It's hilarious, with some great jokes and some even greater characters.

Mindy Kaling is one of those characters. She plays Kelly, a fashion and celebrity obsessed gossip queen, but she has also been one of the writers from the start. This memoir-type book is a look at her childhood, career and her time at The Office and promises to be every bit as funny as the show. 
 

5) Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

And now for a respectable book that isn't pink.

I got about halfway through Anna Karenina when I was about seventeen, but got distracted by a shiny object. Now, with the movie coming out in September and the need to strike it off my Fill in the Gaps list, the time has finally come. 

6) One Day by David Nicholls

Okay, so yes, this was also on my Spring TBR list. But it will happen this time! I'm not sure why I haven't gotten round to it yet as I do really want to read it. I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about it, and I need to get through it so I can watch the film and shudder at Anne Hathaway's terrible accent :)

The ending worries me though... I need happy endings like a fat kid needs donuts, and I've heard this one has a slightly dubious one.

7) Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

Right, look. I hate Pride and Prejudice editions as much as anybody else, but I am strangely intrigued by this one. Not only will it look nice next to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on the allocated shelf, it also genuinely sounds like a decent read.

It seems to be written in Jane Austen's tone and language, and also the characterisation seems intact. Well, you know, aside from Wickham getting murdered, and that's hardly a great loss is it?  

8) Scott Pilgrim vs the World: Precious Little Life Vol. 1 by Bryan Lee O'Malley

 I only bought this a few days ago, but I've already flicked through it three times. I adored the movie and it seems like they stuck pretty closely to the graphic novel.

I know a few people that have read it already and loved it, so this is a definite read for this summer.  

9) Midnight Alley (Morganville Vampires Book Three) by Rachel Caine 

I've gone off teenage vampire books in a huge way, but I bought the entire series about this time last year and they've been glaring at me accusingly ever since.

To be fair, I did really enjoy the first two books when I read them and after seeing Hannah's reviews pop up at Once Upon A Time, I've been meaning to read them for a while. Apparently Midnight Alley is where the series gets 'amazing' instead of just 'good.' I'm actually really looking forward to immersing myself in the series :)  

10) Moby Dick by Herman Melville

I don't know why, but I seem to be going through a bit of a nautical phase lately. I want all things piratey and ship-y! 

It's a huge book, but one I can't wait to get stuck in to. I recently bought a book called Leviathan about whales across culture and literature, but I figured it would probably be best to read this one first.
