Top Ten Tuesday - Book Quotes

This is probably fairly self-explanatory. Book titles link to reviews where possible.

1) 'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
'You must be,' said the Cat, 'or you wouldn't have come here.'

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran book cover2) 'It also turns out that husbands do not read Grazia, and no matter how magnificent or loving they may be, they can't help themselves from sporadically saying '£225! For a purse! JESUS CHRIST,' as if you've just stabbed them quite violently in the balls with a fork, left the fork there, and then hung your coat on it while you go and have a bath.'

How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran

I must have read this passage a hundred times and, honest to God, it makes me laugh out loud each and every time.

3) 'She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain.'

Louisa May Alcott

Not from a book, but about them. I would embroider this on every item of clothing I own if I could, you know, embroider.

Good Omens book cover by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman4) 'Dark light is not actually an oxymoron. It's the colour past ultra-violet. The technical term for it is infra-black. It can be seen quite easily under experimental conditions. To perform the experiment simply select a healthy brick wall, with a good runup, and, lowering your head, charge.

The colour that flashes in bursts behind your eyes, behind the pain, just before you die, is infra-black.'

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, one of my all time favourite books.

5) 'If you have enough space for books, I don't want to talk to you.'

Terry Pratchett. Seconded.

UK book cover of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins6) '"Remember, we're madly in love so it's all right to kiss me anytime you feel like it."'

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

7) 'It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.'

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

8) “You’re kind of a psycho. I get that.”
“I might be,” Monica agreed, and gave her a slow, strange smile. “You’re one smart little freak. Now run away, smart little freak, before I change my mind and stick you in one of these old suitcases for some architect to find a hundred years from now.”
Claire blinked. “Archaeologist.”
Monica’s eyes turned winter cold. “Oh, you’d better start running away now.”

Glass Houses (Morganville Vampire series #1) by Rachel Caine.

This makes me smile ruefully because it was pretty much me during school.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams book cover9) '"Ford... You're turning into a penguin. Stop it."'

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

This has to be in my top five favourite books. I could just lick it.

10) “You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”

We Bought A Zoo by Benjamin Mee

  3. Basically all of these made me giggle! Aaaaand now I feel like a douche cause I picked quotes that are all 'this is how I feel about life' when funny ones are clearly awesomer. Or at least funnier :)

    1. I just don't seem to 'click' with many serious quotes - the funny ones are the ones that stick in my head for some reason. That probably doesn't say a great deal about my intelligence, but hey ho :)

  4. great selection from some great books. I have to say my favourite quote from Good Omens is the one about "the point is. The point is. Dolphins." (I paraphrase and will put the correct version onto my blog shortly.) And my favourite quote from the Caitlin Moran book was her list of the essential items every woman needs in her handbag.

    1. There are so many wonderful quotes from Good Omens - my absolutely favourite is the one where both Crowley and Aziraphale think the other side created traffic wardens when one of them makes a warden vanish. It seemed a little long to post though.

I can't remember that Caitlin Moran quote, but there are loads I loved from THAT book too. I'm definitely going to reread it soon, and I only read it last October. It's just amazing.

  5. I haven't read We Bought a Zoo (but totally need to!), but I did see the movie. And that was one of my favorite scenes of it. Glad to know it came straight from the book.

  7. Wow I haven't even read a lot of those books that the quotes go to. Lol the one about having room for books is really funny.

  8. I love these! You've reminded me of some of my favourite bookish quotes AND made me want to read all the books I haven't already. I think if I were ever to get a tattoo, 'We're all mad here' would be a strong contender... ;)

P.S. The Anne of Green Gables quote is PERFECT!
